In August 1952, a one-man exhibition of Macdonald’s automatic watercolours was shown at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV). This exhibition was Macdonald’s first one-man show since 1947 and included some of his best automatic paintings. A local reviewer called Macdonald the best watercolour painter in Canada. While other artists experimented with watercolour, there was no one as dedicated to the medium as Macdonald. The Argument was acquired by a local collector at the time of Macdonald’s 1952 Victoria exhibition, and was later donated to the AGGV.
